"How do you feel about the state of music today?" Most of it sucks. Straight up. I listen to my iPod, and music before the year 2003. That’s the last year most music truly sounded good to me. I cannot stand 99% of music today, mainstream and underground. "Where is your favorite performance venue?" Let’s see. Chicago is full of haters, but I love it anyways. It is my favorite place. "What differences do you see between live and recorded music?" Live music is real music. Recorded music is just a capturing of the live music, or the production of a studio album so the listener can memorize and prepare for the live experience. Even though recorded music is really what gets your music out there, live music is what music is all about. "Are you signed to a label? If not, would you sign to a label?" No currently I am not. I produce and promote EVERYTHING myself. To tell you the truth the only way I would ever sign to a label is if I knew it was the right thing to do for my life and my goals, and not only for my bank account. However, when opportunities come, I will evaluate my situation. Whenever, it will not be an easy decision because most record labels only care about money, and molding you into something that will make them money, regardless of what you think about doing so. "What artists have had the biggest impact on your music?" Many musician have had a tremendous impact on the music I make. It would literally take forever to name them all individually. So, I will stick the biggest of all Bau Down influences. All Oldies, 2Pac, The Beastie Boys, Coolio, K7, Tag Team, Naughty By Nature, Big Pun, The Mamas & The Papas, Eminem, Proof, Ace of Base, and so many more. "where did you get the name "Bau Down"?" BAUDWN4 was my vanity license plate on my first car. Not gonna lie, it was my best friend Scott’s idea. Of course, the BAUDWN stood for Bau Down...Bau coming from my last name of Bauman.
When I started taking music seriously, writing and recording, I needed a name, and Bau Down was the new nickname for me. So it became my alias for music.
It worked out real well because a couple years later, all these punk ass fake kids and their mothers would try and start rapping all over the place, taking every name thinkable. Bau Down is one that really can’t be taken. Im fortunate.
And yes, that is still my license plate.

| Let’s be honest, nowadays hip-hop artists come a dime a dozen, especially on myspace. There are thousands of rappers that all look, act and sound alike. Quite frankly, there is no way to avoid the fact that most of them suck, and simply only care about trying to become famous for some rediculous reason. On the other hand, every now and then there comes one who really does make great music, stands out for being unique, true to themselves and to their listeners, and does it all for the right reasons.
Bau Down (Kevan Bauman) & twin brother Carsten Bauman were both born in Memphis, Tennessee on August 11th, 1982. Seven months later, Carsten passed away due to a complicated heart problem. Following the tragic loss of his brother, Kevan’s family moved to Birmingham, Alabama until the summer of 1988, when they moved north to Chicago, IL. His experience in music goes back to being a young kid and hanging out in his grandfathers recording studio in Skokie, IL. His grandfather, Verne Engblom, had a Music Recording and Publishing Company named Chordcraft, that he had established in 1964. It was there that he had his first experiences with music creation and action behind the microphone.
In grade school, he continued with his interest in performing, acting in musicals, and auditioning for movie roles. As a kid, he loved to listen to more classic songs on Oldies 104.3, a Chicago based station. As time moved on, his interest extended to more modern music which was at the time exploding into the music scene, artists such as - K7, Ace of Base, Tag Team, Coolio, LLCoolJ and most of the music on the Chicago radio station B96.3, took his musical interest too new places. In late grade school, his older brother Chris exposed him to the music of Tupac Shakur. Tupac’s music drew his attention in a different way than much of the music that he had previously listened too. It was uniquely deeper than much of the music of the day. It sparked an interest in him that he did not ever previously consider. However, it wasn’t until junior year of high school when he discovered a passion deep enough for Hip-Hop music to take a stab at writing and creating his own music. When Senior year of high school came around, it was a turning point in his life. As with everyone, important decisions had to be made. For the time being, his musical ambition had to take a back seat to a college educati on.
Conversely, while he attended college at Concordia - New York in 2002, his passion for music took hold of the steering wheel. It was there that he spent more time during the day and night writing and composing songs on his desktop computer, than he spent on school work. As the school year came to an end all the hard work outside the classroom led him to have enough material for his first LP. In the summer of 2003, he completed his first album, "Another Perspective". The album was a huge accomplishment leading him to realize his potential. With his strong faith in himself & God, he vowed to continue his with his dream in the name of his brother, who did not ever get the chance to chase his.
Bau Down’s music is unique in more ways than one. It is a perfect combination of driven meaningful lyrics, remarkable instrumentals and flawless production. His incredible talent speaks for itself, as it should. For some time now, producers, engineers and artists all around the country have looked to collaborate with Bau Down to advance their own careers.
The music written, produced, engineered and recorded by Bau Down over the years has been astounding and has caught the attention of countless industry professionals and artists alike. Surprisingly though considered, a major record deal has not yet taken place. At the moment, he has all the tools necessary to do what he looks to accomplish, and does not intend on letting a record company mold him into someone they want him to be as they do to so many others. In his opinion, most record labels are a cancer to the fading music industry. However, Bau Down does remain in contact with many interested executives at record companies large and small. However, he is simply not jumping into any opportunity until the offer, conditions and timing are just right.
Kevan just recently graduated from Valparaiso University, Indiana - in December 2006. He lives in the Chicago area currently producing, engineering and recording all involved with his record label, Bau Down Records. He is also the CCM at Chordcraft Music Company, which is launching its revolutionary music website, fanfound.com in April 2007.
With the recent very successful release of his second and critically acclaimed new album "BELIEVE" in 2006, an upcoming collaboration album with FAM titled "Early Retirement", as well as producing solo albums for FAM, Sevyn & Himself this coming year - the future is set to hold nothing but big things for Bau Down. Thanks for reading. |
